Starting Marvel Rivals in Season 8? Short version: pick a role you actually want to play, lock in one hero per role, and ignore tier lists until you've done 20 ranked games. Tier alone isn't a draft strategy.

Step 1 — Pick a role first, hero second

Marvel Rivals locks 2 Vanguards, 2 Duelists, 2 Strategists by default. The biggest Bronze mistake is one-tricking a hero whose role is overstacked — you queue 6 minutes longer and your team fights short-handed.

The fastest climb path is Strategist. Strategist mains queue in 30 seconds, gain influence over teamfights, and have the highest rank-up rate across every public dataset. Vanguard is a close second for the same reason.

  • Want to play DPS? Pick a Duelist, but accept longer queues.
  • Want to climb fast? Pick Luna Snow or Jeff as a Strategist; Groot or Cap as a Vanguard.
  • Want to flex? Deadpool is the only Multi-Role hero — he can swap mid-match.

Step 2 — Learn one hero per role

Don't spread thin. Lock one Strategist, one Vanguard, one Duelist (the "trinity"). When the enemy comp shifts, you swap roles, not heroes. This is what separates Plat from Diamond — flex is not optional past Gold.

Easy starter trinity for fast climbing:

  • Luna Snow (Strategist) — universal pick, S-tier, easy heal kit.
  • Groot (Vanguard) — wall builds + Planet X Pals synergy. Highest skill-to-impact ratio.
  • Punisher (Duelist) — hitscan flex, easy aim, Bestial Hunt anti-sniper tech.

Step 3 — Draft the Team-Up, not the hero

The single biggest move that separates Diamond from Grandmaster: counter-pick the Team-Up, not the hero. If they have a Hela on long sightlines, you don't just pick Iron Fist — you lock Daredevil to enable the Bestial Hunt blind grenade. The Team-Up flips the matchup; the hero swap doesn't.

Step 4 — Ignore these for 20 matches

  • Tier lists. Tier alone isn't a strategy. A B-tier hero you can play well outperforms an S-tier you mash buttons on. Read tiers AFTER you have a main.
  • Lattice purchases. Don't buy skins until S8 (May 15). New season = new bundles. Lattice carries over, Chrono Tokens don't.
  • YouTube one-tricks for Spider-Man / Black Panther / Magik. All three are mechanically demanding. Watch them but don't play them as your first hero. They tilt below Plat.
  • Quick Match meta. QM has no role lock and players grief picks. Use Practice Range and Conquest to learn kits; don't read your QM win rate as a meta signal.

Step 5 — Read the map, not the kill feed

Every map favors specific roles. Yggdrasill Path is a Vanguard map; Museum of Contemplation rewards long-sightline Duelists; Symbiotic Surface is built for Symbiote Shenanigans (Venom + Jeff + Hela). The Map Picks page lists all 14 active maps with role lean and recommended team-ups.
